“Past five months have been a nightmare” Meek Mill says after release from prison

After five months behind bars, American rapper Meek Mill has now been released. Mill was released around 8PM Nigerian time on Tuesday.

The rapper, real name Robert Rihmeek Williams was incarcerated following a controversial two-to-four year prison sentence in November 2017 for violating probation on a 2008 gun and drug case.

Genece Brinkley, a Philadelphia judge in her sentencing order cited a failed drug test and Mill’s non adherence to the 2008 court injunction restricting his travel, after he was arrested for involving in a fight in 2017 and later arrested again for another offence.

But on Tuesday, after too many bail denial that saw the rapper’s case moved to the Pennsylvania Supreme Court recently, an immediate release was ordered for him — the court had directed the judge to release him on “unsecured bail.”

Sharing the good news on Instagram, the rapper described the past five months he has been in prison as a nightmare and a difficult time for him.

He also took out time to thank God, his family and friends and his label, Roc Nation among others.

He wrote,

“I’d like to thank God, my family, my friends, my attorneys, my team at Roc Nation including Jay Z, Desiree Perez, my good friend Michael Rubin, my fans, The Pennsylvania Supreme Court and all my public advocates for their love, support and encouragement during this difficult time. While the past five months have been a nightmare, the prayers, visits, calls, letters and rallies have helped me stay positive. To the Philadelphia District Attorney’s office, I’m grateful for your commitment to justice – not only for my case, but for others that have been wrongfully jailed due to police misconduct.”

Going forward, the rapper pledged to use his platform to fight and speak against injustice in the judicial system for many blacks who don’t have the type of resources he had. He also gave a hint of the possible release of a new single soon.

“Although I’m blessed to have the resources to fight this unjust situation, I understand that many people of color across the country don’t have that luxury and I plan to use my platform to shine a light on those issues” he said. “In the meantime, I plan to work closely with my legal team to overturn this unwarranted conviction and look forward to reuniting with my family and resuming my music career.”
