This year’s show which was hosted by Katy Perry saw the Rapper who had the most nominations took home most of the award categories; 6 in total which include Video of the Year, Artist of the Year, and more.
For the first time, the award ceremony featured a new, non-gendered Artist of the Year category in place of Best Male Video and Best Female Video as Ed Sheeran won the category.
MTV also introduced for the first time an award category “Best Fight Against the System”, which is aimed at recognizing the videos that “inspire viewers to stand up and fight injustice,” according to a statement by the award organizers. Big Sean, Logic, Alessia Cara, and every other nominee all took home the award.
P!nk won the prestigious Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award.
